Radioactive bomb-detection system installed in Haifa port
A unique device designed to detect radioactive material has been installed in the Haifa port.
The device will scan all the containers that enter Haifa via the port, some 1.5 million containers per year, in search of radiation, according to the report.
During recent years, several attempts have been made in Eastern Europe to smuggle radioactive materials into ports through the black market. Many believe that the militant movement Global Jihad is behind the smuggling attempts. Another hypothesis is that terror-supporting countries like Iran, Pakistan or Yemen, which have access to world-wide shipping companies, may be behind the smuggling attempts.
Either way, security officials believe that the ultimate aim is to transport a "dirty bomb" into Israel and carry out what they call a "mega-terror attack."
The Haifa facility is part of a project that spans the globe, with American satellites monitoring suspicious vessels and containers holding delicate materials. Similar facilities have been installed in European, Middle Eastern and Far Eastern ports.
A radioactive bomb detection system is also in the works for Israel´s Ben Gurion International Airport.
