Pumping Machinery Middle East LTD is Struggling for High Efficient Energy Consumption

The long working experience of Pumping Machinery Ltd, located at Rotem Industrial Park, denotes that more than 50% of pumps used in production processes does not work at their rated flows and BEP (Best Efficiency Point), because of modifications in technology, variations in production processes, and oversights in design or calculations of the pump systems. Pump utilization under these conditions means great waste of energy. Pumping Machinery Ltd is currently promoting an initiative to develop and implement new technologies and methods to improve efficiency, effectiveness and reliability of pumps installed at the Israeli power plants, paper mills, water and wastewater facilities, marine, brine and salt water applications, and others.

Today almost every producing facility have pumps. Without such machines of different types, sizes and powers it is impossible to imagine contemporary all goods production. Almost all the pumps are driven by electrical motors, burning huge amount of electrical power. As all the machines, pumps could work more or less efficient.

For everlastingly busy production and maintenance people most valuable feature of pumps is their reliability. Usually they aren't having in mind efficiency of pump functioning. And this is the great mistake.

Each pump of 500 kW power can take 500 (kW) x 24 (Hours) x 365 (Days) = 4,380,000 kW/hour of yearly energy consumption. With a price of ~$0.11 per kW/hour it costs 4,380,000 x 0.11 = $481,800 (or almost 2,000,000 ₪). The pump of 2,000 HP is burning yearly almost 13,000,000 kW/hour or more than 5,500,000 ₪. At this situation every percent of pump efficiency improvement can bring a great amount of savings in energy and money. It is correct also for less powerful pumps, having in mind their vast number.

As US firm, Pumping Machinery have conducted numerous studies on energy utilization improvements, with some of the examples posted on company web site, which the company would be happy to point out for the public references. Some of the examples of its work in the US have been conducted under contracts, such as, to name just some:

  • Southern Company (Georgia Power, Alabama Power, Mississippi Power, Gulf Power)
  • Con Edison Power Generation
  • Department of Environmental Protection, New York
  • DC WASA water and wastewater pump applications, Washington, DC
  • Anheuser-Busch, as a part of Corporate program on Energy Savings

In Israel, however, such statistics does not exist at this time yet, and a planning work of Pumping Machinery Middle East, LTD includes identification of such instances, and applied researches, to apply methods and technologies to improve such installations with regard to energy savings. Pumping Machinery targets to provide such researches at the basis of Israel Electric Company, Mekorot Water Company, Dead Sea Works, and others, being involved in Rotem Industrial Park saving energy projects.

In nearest plans of Pumping Machinery Middle East, LTD there is establishing Pumping Machinery Technology Center as a start-up company in cooperation with Rotem Industries, LTD and other concerned companies. The venture will cover the several specific objectives:

1. Research, develop and implement new technologies and methods to improve efficiency, effectiveness and reliability of pumps installed at the Israeli power plants, paper mills, water and wastewater facilities, marine, brine and salt water applications, and others.

2. Design, produce and test working prototypes to prove the theoretically developed concepts by actual laboratory test loops, followed by the field implementation and follow-up.

3. Provide training and support of engineers, maintenance and operating personnel in Israel, to stay current with new and improved pump technologies.

4. Review and improve pumping systems configuration and apply devices, tools and methods for better utilization and efficiency of the entire systems interacting with pumping equipment.

5. Combine and incorporate mechanical, metallurgical, electrical and computer control technologies for pumps and pump systems application, including remote control and telemetry.

There are several projects currently in various stages of development, with some potently having patentable values, immediate as well as long term perspectives.

As a member of American Israeli Chamber of Commerce Pumping Machinery also take part in discussions about organisation of the US-Israel Cleantech Forum, a new bi-national group to promote cooperation between Israel and the

United States in energy, water, and environment,. and other activities of AICC with a wide margin of renewable energy, Cleantech and saving energy projects.
